Beacon – a noun; a signaling device, as lighthouse, located on a hill or coast (or both) to worn about possible invasion etc.
Batter – a noun; (meaning in the text) a liquid or semiliquid mixture, as of flour, milk, and eggs, used in cooking.
Bleak – an adjective; goomy, depressing, cold.
Ravine – a noun; a deep narrow valley.
Car barn – a place or building for a car
Faintly – an adjective; with lack of brightness, clarity, strength or boldness.
