How We Judge People by Richard Bach

TEXT / TASKS / Task 3.2 v2

Specific HOW-part

Define the features of the medium that can influence the authors text

The author is answering the questions. Answers are the spoken text, so, there can be all features of the spoken language.
The answers should be short, because there is a limited airtime and other questions from other listeners.

Teacher's comment:
I think we can also limit the content by defining the actual radio programme where the author appears. It would help you bring additional limitations and thus improve your writing.

The actual programme: assuming that the book The Bridge Across Forever: A Love Story is a new book, the author (R. Bach) is giving an interview on the radio. He is referring on this book (how, why) for about 20 minutes with breaks. The whole programme lasts 30 minutes, so, there are 10 minutes for questions asked by 5-6 listeners (approx. 2 min each). The radio programme has all listener friendly mood, meaning no academic activity involved.

Define the authors possible reasons and points, also mood while answering the question

The listener had misunderstood the main point of the text and the author isnt supposed to doubt his writing skills and explain why the listener was wrong. However, the question was about the authors relationships with public media. The author explains what the main point of the text was and how the media are related to this situation.

Teacher's comment:
I think you can try to be clearer here.

The listener has the main point of the text misunderstood. The author is trying to explain, point out the real main point of text and how are the public media (reflection of dislike to them is defined by listener as the main point) related to this topic.

1. Point out that there is something misunderstood
2. Explain what is the real main point of the text
3. Relations between public media and the main point
4. The real relation to the public media and the reason why its needed

The mood of the answer is funny sarcastic, because this topic is quite often disliked by famous people and there are many contradictions, which are seen by the author, but cant be fully accepted since hes on a celebritys team.

Define the features of the original author

No specific features. Sentences should be short, no long sentences with difficult structure.

Teacher's comment:
Why no specific features? Hasnt any author got some specific features?

Richard Bach is a very funny person. His way of expressing himself is quite usual for a regular writer guy, but the way he is speaking is adorable. No complex metaphors, funny expressions with his hands, he speaks as if the listener is his friend. Very often brings own experience into conversation. The lack of colourful metaphors is compensated by strong (binary and certain) expressions as hate, craziness, insanity etc. (features of teens language), e.g. Hes crazy, I hate the, Love this, what I think makes his speech sound like a boy next door. (all of this is quite limited by the rules of decency and public performance, but still present)

Teacher's comment:
What are these conclusions based on?
